What Is SEO?

by on September 21, 2009

If you are in the beginning stages of creating an online presence for your business or service, you may have come across the term ‘SEO’. Often referenced as important and crucial for online success, SEO is nevertheless a specialized area that few beginners to the world of online marketing will fully comprehend. However, the importance of SEO is something that anyone creating a Web presence should be aware of, and it is important to grasp the concept and try and implement it into your Web site.

To fully understand SEO, you need to think about how people find information on the internet. For example, if someone is looking for a florist in their local town, how do they go about locating them online? In some cases, the answer may be a straight directory search if the person knows of a local business directory. However, in the vast majority of cases, such a query would result in the use of a search engine.

There are numerous search engines available online, including Yahoo, Dogpile, Ask and the ever-present Google. Simply by typing a search query into one of these powerful algorithms, one can find the desired result. Returning to the local florist example, one can type “florist + san diego” and within seconds a list of florists in San Diego will appear. It’s quick, easy and improves the functionality of the internet no end. But, you must ask yourself, how does one go about appearing in the results of these search engines? Will your Web site appear automatically?

The answer is simple; while your Web site may rank somewhere (albeit page 70 of the search results), to get a good ranking you will need to implement SEO techniques. ‘SEO’ actually means ’search engine optimization’, and a good use of this will allow your business or service to appear on the first two or three pages of a search. Considering few people will bother to look beyond the first page of a search, effective SEO could be the make or break for your business. There is no point having a website, business or listing with an online presence if people do not know about it.

The difficulty is, in the vastness of the Internet, things get lost. Most search terms typed into a search engine will return thousands, sometimes millions, of results. SEO is about making your Web site stand out from the crowd and appear on that lucrative first page of search results. Where you appear on a list of search engine results is known as search ranking. To rank well in the search results, you will need to have thorough and effective SEO throughout your Web site.

If this is implemented in the correct way, you will begin to see your Web site creep up the “rankings” and toward that coveted first page. Google and other search engines constantly update their listings, and you can continue to work using SEO to improve your positioning.

The end result of effective SEO is high placement of your Web site on a search engine results page. This, in turn, will lead people to your website, and then from there you can generate business. SEO is, quite simply, everything if you want to maintain a successful online presence.
